🍎 TINY TOXINS: SEASONAL EDITION 🍎
Toffee apples involve a few different things to check before curious paws take a bite.
The apple flesh itself isn’t toxic to dogs, but:
🍬 Sugar-free or homemade coatings may contain xylitol, also called birch sugar. Xylitol can cause dangerously low blood glucose and, in severe cases, liver damage in dogs.
🍏 Apple seeds contain cyanogenic compounds. A couple of seeds are unlikely to cause poisoning, but cores and seeds should still be removed before offering apple.
🪵 The wooden stick and apple core may present choking or obstruction hazards if swallowed.
🍫 Some decorated versions may also contain chocolate or other unsafe toppings.
Keep toffee apples safely out of reach and check the ingredients if your dog manages to eat one. Contact your veterinary practice or Animal PoisonLine if it contains xylitol, chocolate, an unknown coating, or if the stick has been swallowed.
One tiny check. One safer environment. 🩵🐾
